Equine therapy support for cancer

Equilore founder Dr Loes Koorenhof will be running 55km across 15 mountains (21 peaks) through the Breacon Beacons to raise funds to subsidise Equilore sessions to families affected by cancer. Equine Assisted Therapy has been a key service provided by Equilore and The Hummingbird Centre.

Mechelle Harris, Founder of The Hummingbird Centre, says: “Equine Therapy has helped our guests in many unexpected ways, especially those who have struggled to engage with our ‘normal’ counselling services. Working with the horses brings a unique level of calm and trust to those who’s lives are up side down throughout their cancer journey.”

Dr Loes Koorenhof explains why she is taking on this challenge: “We need this service to continue and in order to do so I have set myself a challenge, a real challenge. As a Dutchie, growing up 20 metres below sea level and learning hill starts on speed bumps, I have little concept of mountains, let alone run across them. Although, as a runner, my furthest race to date has been 10 miles.

On the 10th of June, I am running the BB Ultra; a 55km trail race across 21 peaks, with over 2500ft of elevation. I will have 12 hours to complete this race, which crosses over 15 mountains.

This run will take me full circle to the start of Equilore, as it was breaking my ankle on a trail run in 2016 that had me abandoning my career in academia to start up my therapeutic work with horses. To be trail running across rocky and uneven terrain will add another layer to the challenge, but it will be awesome to raise funds to support our services for the Hummingbird Centre.”

Please do support Loes in her challenge to raise money to continue to provide much needed mental health support through equine facilitated interventions for families affected by cancer.
